Local Landmark Program

Mayors House
The City of Elgin offers the Local Landmark Program to recognize local landmarks, encourage historic preservation and to increase community awareness of our heritage.

The Elgin Historic Review Board and the Elgin Historical Association worked together to develop the program which is modeled after the marker program with the Texas Historical Commission. Marker applications are provided for structures, cemeteries, churches or synagogues, and events.

Historic markers are purchased by the applicants for all approved Historic Landmark Applications.

Request Process
The process allows for applications to be submitted at any time. Applications received by January 15 annually will be considered for an award in that same calendar year.

Applications will be reviewed by the Local Landmark Committee composed of representatives from the Elgin Historical Association and the Historic Review Board.

The Local Landmark Committee will make recommendations to the Historic Review Board or Planning and Zoning Commission and recommendation from there to City Council.

In addition to the Local Landmark, applicants may also purchase a Story Marker.

For additional information or assistance in applying for a marker please contact the Community Development Department at 512-281-5724.
