No Swim Lessons will be offered for the Summer 2023 Pool Season. 

Kirsten Teaching Children to Float

The American Red Cross Water Competency Sequence:
  • Step or jump into the water over your head
  • Return to the surface and float of tread water for one minute
  • Turn around in a full circle without touching the bottom of the pool
  • Swim 25 yards to the exit
  • Exit from the water without using stairs or a ladder
Swim lessons are taught by American Red Cross Lifeguards and are provided at Morris Memorial Pool depending on Lifeguard availability.

Each session will consist of 4 lessons over the span of 2 weeks on Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays from 6:15PM - 7:15PM. Cost per session is $75 per child. If the lesson is cancelled due to weather, the make up class will be that following Saturday morning from 10:30AM-11:30AM.

Morris Memorial Pool Swim Lessons

The goal of Elgin Parks & Recreation Swim Lessons are to build comfort in the water and provide children the basic skills needed to be safe while enjoying the pool this Summer. Parents should still watch their children in the water and use the buddy system when visiting bodies of water with their children, regardless of a child's swim abilities. 

DOLPHINS

The goal of our dolphin level is to build comfort in the water. This class is about safety and feeling confident in the water to children do not panic in a water emergency. 

Level One Skills

  • Entering the water without help
  • Putting head under water
  • Opening eyes under water
  • Blowing bubbles with nose and mouth
  • Scissor kicks at the wall
  • Forward crawl arms from standing
  • Floating on back and front
  • Locating an exit and leaving water without help

WHALES

The goal of our whales level is to build upon the skills they already know to create forward momentum. By the end of class they will understand the basics of two different strokes. 

Level Two Skills

  • Breath holding
  • Basic Front Crawl
  • Basic Back Stroke
  • Swimming 3 body lengths to wall
  • Changing direction while swimming
  • Touching the bottom of the pool
  • Treading Water

SHARKS

The sharks will build proficiency and stamina in three basic strokes. Children should be able to pass the American Red Cross Water Competency Sequence by the end of level 3. 

Level Three Skills

  • Front Crawl proficiency
  • Backstroke proficiency
  • Breast Stroke proficiency
  • Jumping into the pool from the side
  • Exiting without using stairs or ladder

Swim Lesson Tips

  • Understand that children develop swimming skills at different rates
  • Bring an extra towel for students as they are often cold when getting out of the pool
  • Bring a light snack and drink for your child since they are often hungry/thirsty after a lesson
  • Arrive at least 5 minutes prior to the start of class
  • Bring your registration receipt to ensure you are attending the correct class
  • Be enthusiastic and support your child by praising their efforts in the pool
  • Provide additional practice time with your child during public swim to build their confidence and skills
  • Avoid using goggles or swim shoes until children build comfort in the water without them first

Swim Lesson Registration Policies

  • Child or individual participating in the swim lessons must be 5 years of age or older by the start of swim lessons
  • Preregistration is necessary to allow for instructor scheduling and must be received no later than 72 hours prior to start date
  • Payment must be received at time of registration. We will not reserve a space without payment
  • Swim lesson fees are transferable, if availability exists
  • Cancelled swim lessons are subject to a $30 cancellation fee up to 48 hours prior to the first class date
  • Refunds are not available if class is cancelled less than 48 hours in advance of session beginning
  • Make up classes or refunds for classes missed due to vacations or schedule conflicts are not allowed
  • Make up classes must be scheduled with the Parks Department and will be subject to class availability
  • Children who are not potty trained must wear a swim diaper covered by a swimsuit
  • Instructor preference is not available for group lessons
  • Parents/Responsible Guardian must be present pool side for the entirety of the swim lesson

Cancellations

Refund requests must be made 48 hours before the first class of the session and are subject to a $30 cancellation fee. Session may be changed for a later session date dependent on availability, and requests must be made 48 hours prior to the start date of the original session.
