Martin Luther King Day Walk & Celebration, Jan. 16

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. WALK & CELEBRATION

Presented by the Bastrop County Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission


The walk begins at 10 a.m. at Veterans' Memorial Park located at 109 Depot Street and proceeds to Booker T. Washington Elementary School.


The program begins at 11 a.m. at the BTW gymnasium located at 510 Martin Luther King Boulevard. The walk includes a stop at the Elgin Black Icons Mural.

Parking is available at the Elgin Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center located at 114 Central Avenue or at the Depot Museum located at 14 Depot Square and on streets throughout downtown, as well as City Hall and the Library Complex located at 310 N Main Street. Parking is also available at Booker T. Washington Elementary School and at Thomas Memorial Park.

Black Icons Mural Dedication

The Black Icons Mural is Elgin Main Street Program's gift to the community with funding support from Jimmy & Cindi Ferguson, Elgin McDonald's, in honor of the Sesquicentennial. It will be dedicated, Saturday, January 14 at 11 a.m.
The mural recognizes and celebrates Elgin's Black icons:

Harvey Westbrook,
Annie Lee Haywood,
S.H. McShan,
Dorothy McCarther
and Monty Joe Thomas.

Jump into the new year this Saturday, January 7th! Elgin Parks & Recreation will be at Morris Memorial Pool from 10:00AM - 11:00AM for our FREE Polar Bear Plunge! Gates open at 9:45AM, and the jump will happen at 10:15AM.
Register ahead of time to help us get adequate supplies!

Elgin Rec Center Christmas Tree Recycling through Jan. 9

Christmas Tree Recycling at Elgin Rec Center


To recycle your Christmas tree, bring it to the west parking lot of the Elgin Memorial Park. It's close to the intersection of Hwy. 95 and Main Street. Only natural trees clean of ornaments, lights and tinsel can be recycled.

The mulch from these trees will be used in upcoming park volunteer projects. For more information, contact the parks department at 512-285-6434.
